Berlitz met this challenge with a practical and ingenious solution when he told the teacher to point at objects and name them and to act out verbs. Before long, the students were speaking with their teacher in elegantly accented French. This gave Berlitz the idea to develop a system of language instruction that replaced rote learning with active participation.
